Overview

Skin tags are non-cancerous growths on the skin. It is painless, soft and connected to skin with peduncle or stalk. It can grow anywhere in the body but it seems to appear more on the neck, face and groin area. Skin tags are not dangerous and cause no problem or harm to the body.

Skin tags are very common among men and women and appear after mid-age completion. It be appear where the skin folds like armpit, thigh, groin,neck etc.

Diagnosis of Skin Tag

The size of skin tags may vary from 1 mm to 1 CM. It looks like flesh type or it may be brownish. It can be hanging off from the skin and looks very small in size. They are generally asymptomatic and causes no pain or itchiness. If there is pain, itchiness and bleeding you must have to consult your doctor immediately.

One can easily diagnose the skin tags as the features discussed in the above paragraph. It is very soft and feels like flesh when touching.

Causes of Skin Tags

There is no exact known cause of skin tags yet but it is said that being overweight may cause to trigger the skin tags as obesity causes skins to fold in many parts of the body and where the skin will get fold or rubbing against the skin there is a chance of growing skin tags.

According to one study conducted in 2008 in USA it is found that nearly 50 percent of patient’s skin tags has the DNA of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Due to the side effects of pregnancy skins tags start growing in the body as due to pregnancy hormone levels changes rapidly resulted in skin tag formation.

Obesity and insulin resistance are also the cause of skin tag formation in the body.

Treatment of Skin Tag

Skin tag does not cause any problem but it looks cosmetically not good. The treatment of skin tags through medications is not available in allopathy but there is an option of removal through various methods which are as follows:

Surgical Removal- In the surgical removal, your surgeon will remove the tag with the help of a scissor by using local anesthesia.

Cryotherapy- In this method, your doctor will freeze the tag with the help of liquid nitrogen.

Electrotherapy- In this method, your doctor will burn your skin tag with high frequency electrical energy.

Ligation Method- In this method, your doctor will use surgical thread to tightly knot the tag to cut the blood supply and after some days your tag will fall off.

Home remedies for skin tag removal- You can also try some home remedies for skin tag removal. These remedies may take a longer time to heal and you need to apply this treatment on regular basis. You can use apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil and lemon vinegar juice mix. You can apply any of this only on the skin tag twice daily and gradually the skin tag will be dried.

In homeopathy it is said that thuja works great on skin tags. You can take thuja 15-20 drops daily with warm water and skin tag will be healed but this treatment may take a longer time.

Conclusion

In general, skin tags are not dangerous or don’t cause any pain or un-comfort. It only matters for those who care about cosmetic and aesthetic. If it doesn’t bother you can leave them where it is. If you have a skin tag and you opted for surgery there is no surety that it will not grow again. In most of the peoples, it appears multiple locations and after the surgery, it again appears.

If you are overweight, try to loose weight. It reduces the risks of skin tag developing.
