Piles: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment

Piles (Haemorrhoids) are inflammation that develops inside the linings of the anus. There are huge veins and soft and spongy tissues that surrounded our anus like a network that flows blood in itself. When these veins engorged with more blood and blood is not able to circulate from that part it becomes inflate and cause piles.

Haemorrhoids can develop inside the rectum (internal haemorrhoid ) as well as external known as external haemorrhoid. Haemorrhoid is very common in adults as well as old age peoples. It has a lot of causes but what is the exact cause is unknown yet.

Symptoms of Haemorrhoid

The sign and symptoms of haemorrhoid vary from its types.

External Haemorrhoid

External haemorrhoids are found around your anus under the skin


Itching and Burning


Swelling in the affected area

Internal Haemorrhoid

Internal Haemorrhoid found inside the rectum and cannot see or feel as like external. You may feel pain and discomfort while passing stool. Others symptoms are

Painless bleeding and irritation while passing stools.

Feeling of Discomfort


The main causes of Haemorrhoids are pressure on the veins which is caused by passing the stool. when we pass stool it causes pressure on the veins and the pressure may bulge and stretch the veins causing Haemorrhoids. Other causes are:-

Being Obese

Being Pregnant

Too Much oily ans Spicy food

Heavy weight lifting


Low fiber diet intake

Poor life style


The diagnosis of piles will be made by your treating doctor who will check your rectum and asks your symptoms. He may also check your rectum by inserting his finger and feel the piles and will be able to tell and diagnose what is the stage of your pile. If necessary he may usea proctoscope to see inside the rectum.

Treatment of Piles

There are various treatments available to treat the piles. These include surgical as well as non- surgical which are as follows:-

Non-Surgical includes:-

Certain medicines and ointments which is used to treat the piles. It gives relief to the patients from pain and swelling.

You may take a laxative if you are passing hard stools to soften the stools which will not cause pain and bleeding.

Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and paracetamol for pain and swelling.

Use of local anaesthetic to ease the pain and discomfort like lidocain.

Surgical treatment

If your piles reached the chronic stage and all the non surgical medications are not working your surgeon will remove the piles by simply removing called Haemorrhoidectomy.


There are certain steps which is being used worldwide to avoid the piles problem.these are as follows:-

Avoid long sitting

Use high fiber diet

Drink plenty of water

Avoid constipation at any rate

Avoid straining while passing stool

Avoid being obese
