Gynecomastia: Causes, Treatment

Gynecomastia is the condition where the breast gland tissue increases due to the imbalance of hormones levels in boys and older mens. The enlargement may be in one or both sided of the breast of men. Generally it occurs in the boys ages between 13 to 18 where the hormone levels increases too much to grow the body. It also affects the older men but it can occur at any ages of men.


Gynecomastia is not treated in the society as a disease. This does not cause any problem to the patient but it looks odd and the patient may feel discomfort while removing clothes publicly. Sometimes patient may feel discomfort and pain the lesion but does not cause any serious problem.


  • Swelling and pain
  • Tenderness in breast
  • Discharge


Gynecomastia occurs due to decrease in the levels of testosterone levels compared to estrogen. This causes increase in breast glands in men.


Treatment of gynecomastia varies person to person. Some peoples recovers only with the help of some medications like finasteride, Dutasteride and Silodosin and some has to opt for surgery. It is performed by Plastic Surgeons as well as General Surgeon. Most of the surgeries are performed only at the patients will because it is like cosmetic surgery and if patient is not intended to opt his decision will be considered because gynecomastia does not cause any problems to the patient.
