Overview

Prostate enlargement is the condition caused by the enlargement of prostate affecting the urethra which causes urine retention,difficulty in urination and urine infection. This condition is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (bph).The cause of bph is yet unknown but studies shows this is due to over aging which affects the hormonal system of the body resulted in bph.

The location of the prostate is just below the urinary bladder. Urethra is surrounded by the bladder and when it enlarged the urethra is pressed by the prostate gland which resulted in urination problems. Normal size of prostate in young adults is 15 gm but after 45 years one can experience the growing of the glands upto 150 gm.

Causes

There is not much data available which determines the exact reasons of prostate enlargement but some studies says that some androgenic hormonal changes causes prostate enlargement like testosterone and estrogen. As our body becomes older our harmonal changes took place and the excretion of testosterone hormone excreted more when we are getting older to check the old age but due to side effects of the extra harmonal activity prostate gland grows.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the enlarged prostate vary from person to person as a man getting older. There are variety of symptoms which are as follows:-

  • An urge to urinate at night
  • Nocturia
  • Painful urination
  • dribbling urination
  • Dysuria
  • Feeling of bladder not emptied after urination
  • Weak urine stream
  • Leakage of urine

Diagnosis of BPH

There are variety of investigation available to access the prostate few of them which is essential are as follows:-

Ultrasound- If you have these problem your doctor may suggest you to go for ultrasound. ultrasound may give clear picture of your prostate including size,shape and weight which can be helpful in diagnosing the problem. This investigation is painless and take less formalities and time.

Urine analysis- Your doctor may prescribe pathological test for urine routine examination by which one can access the possible infection of urine and blood in urine if any.

PSA- This blood test is for prostate cancer. If it is More than 4 ng/ml then it may be the sign of prostate cancer.

Urodynamics- This test is costly and not available in every hospitals. It checks the strength of the bladder.

Treatment of BPH

Treatment of bph is very effective in case of prostate enlargement.There are various medicines available to control the enlarged prostate.Your doctor may suggest you the medicines which suite you best.

Alpha-1 Drugs

Tamsulosin

Alfuzosin

Silodosin

Doxazosin

Terazosin

Instead of these medications doctor also prescribe harmone reduction medicines which controls the men harmone which resulted in control of prostate enlargement. Finasteride and dutasteride are the two medicines which comes in combination with the above said medicines and the result of these medicines are also very good.

Surgery

When prostate is not respond to medicines or patient is not getting relief from medicines your doctor may suggest you for surgery. In surgery whole prostate gland is removed and patient get immediate relief. There are various kind of surgery is available and the most common and famous surgery for bph is TURP Transurethral resection of the prostate where your doctor insert small instrument through urethra and it removes the prostate in small pieces.

Earlier when prostate surgery like TURP was not available then simple prostatectomy were performed where your doctor make cut in your abdomen area and removes prostate.This kind of procedure is big and it requires 4 to 5 days stay in the hospital.

Treatment of BPH with exercise
